How it works:
Fluoride has been clinically proven to be effective in preventing dental caries. Fluoride can become incorporated into the hydroxyapatite at the tooth surface to form a new mineral, fluorapatite. Fluorapatite is less soluble at low pH than hydroxyapatite and hence the tooth becomes more resistant to demineralization. Low levels of fluoride found in saliva and plaque (fluoride in plaque fluid acts as a reservoir held at the tooth surface) accelerate remineralisation which leads to the replacement of lost calcium and phosphate to the tooth from the saliva by driving the thermodynamic equilibrium for crystal growth.
Sodium bicarbonate has a mild abrasive agent action which helps clean and remove plaque and stains. Sodium bicarbonate has also been shown to neutralise acids and inhibit salivary glycolysis (the breakdown of glucose and sugars).
